Teachers Matter

President Obama State of the Union Address - January 24, 2012
“We know a good teacher can increase the lifetime income of a classroom by over $250,000. A great teacher can offer an escape from poverty to the child who dreams beyond his circumstance. Every person in this chamber can point to a teacher who changed the trajectory of their lives. Most teachers work tirelessly, with modest pay, sometimes digging into their own pocket for school supplies — just to make a difference.”
“Teachers matter. So instead of bashing them, or defending the status quo, let’s offer schools a deal. Give them the resources to keep good teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. And in return, grant schools flexibility: to teach with creativity and passion; to stop teaching to the test; and to replace teachers who just aren’t helping kids learn. That’s a bargain worth making.”
- President Obama
Now I know this is an educational blog and I know I’m supposed to talk about schools and all that good stuff but I MUST share this…
For many years, cancer research centers have studied cancerous breast tissue and are now attempting to try something new. Healthy breast tissue is now needed for research in hopes finding a cure for breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank is the only tissue bank in the world that collects healthy breast tissue and guess what, it’s located right here in Indianapolis!
The Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank has partnered with Indianapolis Super Bowl XLVI for the Indy Super Cure. On January 28th and 29th, 2012 the Indy Super Cure and the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank hopes to collect 700 tissue donations.
I am specifically reaching out to minority women in the Indianapolis area. Your breast tissue is needed to most! Although white women are more likely to develop breast cancer, they are less likely to die from it. African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer and tend to have very aggressive tumors.
There’s not enough women of color donating their healthy breast tissue and the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank desperately needs minority tissue. Many minority women are unaware that a tissue bank exist right here in Indianapolis and many just don’t want to undergo the procedure. Women of color, we need to step up to the plate, donate tissue, and help end this battle against breast cancer.

A few of my favorite art education quotes…
“Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence.” - Joseph M. Calahan, Director of Cooperate Communications, Xerox Corporations
“The arts are an essential element of educations, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic…music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment.” - William Bennett, Former Secretary of Education
“The future belongs to young people with an education and imagination to create.” - President Barack Obama
“Music education should not be privilege for the lucky few, it should be a part of every child’s world of possibility.” - Hilary Clinton

First, I would like to apologize for not blogging much this past week. I’ve been extremely busy and I’ve been having technical issues with my laptop.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this blog and I think it’s time for me to take this blog to the next level. I’m going to start reporting my own educational news (news that did not hit the local newspapers and television broadcasts) as well as blog about educational news that’s already out there. This transition make take some time especially since I’m very busy working full-time and interning but I’m up for the challenge!
Btw…if you live in Indy and know of anything that is educationally newsworthy…contact me!!
Thanks
This is true…
When I was in middle school and high school, I loooooooved drawing. I was in the Artistically Talented Club, I took every art and advanced art/drawing course, I even won awards for some of my drawings. I don’t know why I stopped. : (

Schools no longer make ”the arts” a requirement. Now they’re electives….
